A safe boarding home educating young Dalit girls (Formerly referred to as untouchables)
A program of DR.AWARD (Dr. Ambedkar Women and Child Regeneration Development Program)
“ Our is a battle not for wealth or for power.
It is a battle for freedom. It is a battle for the
reclamation of human personality”
– Dr. Ambedkar (Dalit Leader,)
THAI Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu, India.
At a given time about 30 - 35 young Dalit girls from those referred to as "Manual Scavenging Community" (Public toilet cleaners) reside at THAI to succeed in their studies and move on to a better economic status. You can be a part of this historic effort to break the 3000 year old cycle of the caste system for this most socially ostracized community in India.
THAI provides a healthy living space with nutritious food, private tutoring, a spiritual and wholesome nurturing and self - confidence. Family bonds are nurtured by visits from parents and children going home for weekends. We have placed young girls who have completed their high school through THAI in nursing schools, engineering colleges, teacher certification programs and liberal arts colleges.
Building a Boarding Facility: The building we hoped to raise as a boarding facility has completed phase 1. Later on we envision a school that will cater to about 200 of these children. As targeted the boarding building as phase 1 was completed in December 2015. The building now has the capacity to cater to the residential needs of 50 school going girl children. Thank you to all who contributed to this building process so generously. We raised about $48,000 US Dollars and about one lakh Rupees in money and kind to help with this project. Building was constructed by local Dalit communities.
Future project of building a school will cost about $350,000.
Education and boarding cost per child: $600/year (about $50/month)
You are welcome to support a child through her school education, and beyond to place them in colleges either financially and/or by writing letters. You can specify your contribution towards the building project as well.
